Countries

The four countries that we work with currently for inter-country adoptions are:

Additional information on these four countries have been included on this website.  In addition, these government links offer good background information:

United States

In the US we have a relationship with three different agencies that are all licensed to facilitate newborn adoptions.  The children available are of both sexes and varied racial and cultural backgrounds but are primarily of African American or Bi-racial heritage.

To learn more about the agencies, children available, and family requirements, visit the links below.  We encourage adoptive parents to contact the agencies directly so that they can chose the agency which they feel is the best fit for them personally.  Please keep in mind that it is necessary to have an adoption agency in both countries to ensure that all legal requirements in both countries are met.  The US agencies have their own fees and legislation that have to be satisfied in addition to those in BC.

If you are interested in learning more about adopting through the U.S., please read this document US Adoptions (MS Word) for further details.

China

All Chinese adoptions are processed through their central government branch, the China Centre for Adoption Affairs (CCAA)China ratified The Hague Convention in January 2006.  Since that time, CCAA has advised that the children available are almost exclusively female and range in age from approximately 0-24 months and 7 years and older.  CCAA advises that they have no children available for adoption between the ages of 2 and 6 years at this time.  China has specific requirements of adoptive families.  These requirements were changed as of May 1, 2007.  If you are interested in this program, please read this document China Adoptions (MS Word) for further details.  Applicants with Chinese Ancestry and applicants wishing to adopt a child over 7 years of age may be eligible to have their applications expedited.  For more information on this, please contact us.

Haiti

In Haiti, all adoptions are processed through their central government branch, the Institut du Bien Etre Social et de Research (IBESR), however, the orphanage where the child resides usually plays a centre role in assisting with this process.  Children available are between the ages of newborn and older.  All children are of Haitian Creole background.  We have a relationships with several orphanages which are licensed by the IBESR.  Two such orphanages are:

We encourage families to contact orphanages directly, usually through their website, so that they can ensure personally that they are comfortable working with that orphanage and that the orphanage has children in the age range that the family is interested in adopting and is comfortable working with the family.  Haiti has specific requirement of adoptive families – if you are interested in this program, please read this document Haiti Adoptions (MS Word) for further details.

Ethiopia

To facilitate adoptions from Ethiopia, BC agencies need to work with agencies in Canada who are accredited by the ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in Ethiopia.  There are two such agencies which are currently in operation in Canada:

Adoptive parents need to register both with a BC licensed adoption agency and one of these two Ethiopian entities to ensure that legislative requirements of both jurisdictions are met.  Children available range in age from a few weeks old and up.  All children are racially Black.

Ethiopia has specific requirement of adoptive families – if you are interested in this program, please read this document Ethiopia Adoptions (MS Word) for further details.

Other Countries

In addition to these countries we may consider working with other countries where it is possible on a case by case basis.
